Since I’m planing to move to Australia in the begining of ‘08, I’ve done some research of the domain industry in Australia. So far, I consider an australian .com.au domain to be pretty expencive. After surfing around for a while, I found a huge gap between the prices from the different hosting companies. I went over to AUDA and found a list over all the registrars. From this list, a compiled a list over all the australian domain prices.
All prices are in AUD and are for a two year periode.
- IntaServe Pty Ltd $27.95
- Wobygong Pty Ltd $35
- Domain Central Pty Ltd $37.95
- SmartyHost Pty Ltd $39.95 (NB: Their having a sale - buy any domain for $12.99 a year)
- NetRegistry Pty Ltd $44.95
- Namescout Corporation $49.95
- Distribute.IT Pty Ltd trading as Click’n Go! $59
- Planet Domain Pty Ltd $60
- Discount Domain Name Services Pty Ltd $65
- Aust Domains International Pty Ltd $69
- Anchor Systems Pty Ltd $69
- Enetica Pty Ltd $69
- Melbourne IT Ltd $80 (Price in USD)
- Westnet Pty Ltd $88
- Sublime IP Pty Ltd trading as GoDomains $98

- Connect West Pty Ltd $99
- AussieHQ Pty Ltd $99
- Explorer Domains Pty Ltd $99.95
- Domain Directors Pty Ltd $118

Sites I didn’t review because their sites wasn’t running at the time:
So this is my list. Do anyone have any experience with any of these companies?

Hi Kenneth,
I live in AU and have multiple domains, but not one of them is .com.au so I’m wondering why you might be planning on getting one.
.com domains have wider appeal to the American audience.
Maybe you can spare yourself the high cost of AU domains. I certainly agree with you the domains here are expensive, especially when you look at the price of .co.uk domains (with the UK being perhaps parallel to AU… both English speaking, both outside the US/Canada, both TLDs).
Gary
Im thinking of starting a few sites that will be targeting only Australian users, so it feel natural to use an AU domain. It might of course be that Im wrong about it.. guess I’ll learn more about you australian when I get down there, in about two months
Perhaps you’re right, Kenneth.
It might be interesting to check out the top sites that target your intended AU market and see what TLDs they are using. Let that guide you.
